Renault bring a HANS device to the public
One of the many reasons that car manufacturers are involved in Formula One is the transfer of technology from the pinnacle of the sport to the road cars of tomorrow. Renault has looked at child safety and come up with a rather novel idea.
The HANS device has been commonplace in top-flight motorsport for some years now and the French manufacturer has investigated why injuries to children involved in road accidents are greater than that of adults. The study concluded that children do not fit well into current restraint systems and should they fall asleep, slide out of the mechanism.

Renault has developed a HANS-style ‘sleep safe’ restraint which provides extra head and neck support and holds a child upright and in their seatbelt should they fell asleep and also cushion the head in a side impact, reducing the chances of neck injury.

The equipment will be available first on the Espace and then across the Renault range shortly aimed at children between the ages of six and ten.
