German media reports on Schumacher`s returnFernando Alonso may have won the opening Bahrain Grand Prix on Sunday but Germany hailed their seven-time Formula One champion Michael Schumacher as the victor following his second place.
"The runner-up is really victor," declared the Frankfurter Allgemeine. "After being off the pace last season Ferrari and Schumacher are competitive again."
An unreliable Ferrari contributed to Schumacher finishing a distant third last season as Alonso won the Formula One crown and questions were raised as to how Schumacher would fare this season.
"When you consider how far away we were last season then this result is phenomenal," Schumacher stated on his personal website. "It is great to see that all the hard work in the winter has paid off.
It is nice to be back in with a fighting chance and I am raring to go in the next race."
Starting from pole Schumacher kept reigning champion Alonso at bay but the Spaniard used superior refuelling stops to edge ahead of the German and take the chequered flag.
"Schumacher still has what it takes but unfortunately Alonso is that bit better," declared Bild daily. "German Formula One would be rejoicing if it wasn`t for this Spaniard!"
