Formula One`s current summer break will come to an end on 21st August, the day of the first ever Turkish Grand Prix.
The track was planned and built by Hermann Tilke, a German architect. Tilke is already looking forward to the inaugural event. One of his main aims was to integrate a slight touch of Turkey.
“We used some oriental elements, which are not seen too often any more in the country, as Turkey has become fairly modern in architectural terms,” he says.
The 5.340 kilometre circuit poses a significant driving challenge, too.
“There is a 180 degree corner consisting of several straight segments, therefore not having a flowing radius,” Tilke explains. “It`s not easy to meet the racing line there. If a driver manages to do so, he can stay on full throttle, but if not, he will have to make corrections and lose a lot of time.”
However, Tilke is not expecting to earn unanimous applause for his creation. “Of course there will always be drivers opposed to a new track,” he adds, “but once the drivers start to complain, one has to assume that it is a challenging and good circuit.”
