A great day for the Spanish peopleSpain`s King Juan Carlos on Sunday warmly congratulated newly-crowned world motor racing king Fernando Alonso after the 24-year-old became the youngest ever winner of the Formula One drivers` championship.
"Juan Carlos expressed his great happiness and has proffered his warmest congratulations (to Alonso) in his name, that of the queen and the royal household and all Spaniards as this is a great day for the Spanish people," a royal household statement read.
Alonso`s triumph at the Interlagos circuit in Brazil came less than three weeks after he won Spain`s prestigious Asturias Prize for Sport for his thrilling exploits on the way to ending the six-year reign of outgoing champion Michael Schumacher.
The king has followed his progress closely and personally cheered on the champion-elect last May in the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona.
