Fisichella surprised with front row
Fernando Alonso hailed his Pole Position clinch for the Chinese Grand Prix as the perfect lap, and warned his rivals that his Renault was getting better and better.
The new world champion secured his sixth pole of the year with a storming lap at the Shanghai International Circuit, beating teammate Giancarlo Fisichella into second and archrival Kimi Raikkonen into third.
"I don`t think I can imagine where I could have found more time. I drove every corner as fast as I could and the car surprised me in every corner as to how good it was," said the Spaniard, describing his time as `perfect`. "I was just getting more and more confident... and did the best lap of the weekend."
The Renault driver hasn`t won a race since the German Grand Prix on July 24, being forced to watch Raikkonen take the glory, but now feels his car, with a new engine, is back to its best.
"I think all year we have been conservative because the advantage in the championship was really nice, and there was no time to risk. And now we have proved that when we want to risk we are on the front row," Alonso said. "Everything has been very positive all weekend. All the tests we did with this engine were also really, really positive so I am full of confidence for the team for Sunday."
Alonso said he planned to be aggressive in Sunday`s race, where the fate of the constructors` championship hangs in the balance, with Renault two points clear of McLaren. "I am in the perfect position to fight for the win tomorrow."
With teammate Fisichella lining up alongside him on the front row, Renault are a step closer to securing their first Constructors` title. Fisichella, who won the opening race of the season in Australia but has yet to repeat the feat, said he was confident of being on the podium.
"I am really pleased to be second because I was struggling with the car this weekend and didn`t expect to be on the front row," he admitted. "We did some changes at the last minute and that really improved things. It is very promising for Sunday. We will go for it."
