Another milestone for the former World ChampionFor the 40th time, Stig Blomqvist will be at the start of the Swedish Rally. This is an incredible record for the former World Champion, who has had tremendous success in his home event throughout the years.
Blomqvist, who will be 60-year-old on 29 July 2006, is also the record holder for the most victories in one event of the World Championship. The Swede won his home event seven times. His first victory came in 1971 at the wheel of a Saab. He also won the following two editions in 1972 and 1973, once again in a Saab.
After a fourth victory in 1977, Blomqvist was the first driver to win a round of the World Championship in a turbocharged car - the Saab 99 Turbo – during the 1979 edition of the Swedish Rally.
The Swede clinched two more victories in his home event, this time at the wheel of the Audi Quattro in 1982 and 1984, the year of his World Championship title.
