Before Corona Rally Mexico 2006
Xavier Pons really enjoys Rally Mexico and for that reason, the Spaniard expects to have a fun race at the wheel of the Xsara WRC.
You took part twice in the Mexican round. In group N, then with a World Rally Car. Tell us a bit more about your experience.
“Mexico is a wonderful country! And here we speak Spanish; it`s a bit like home. It is right that I have competed here in 2004 and 2005. Really, it`s a great event but also where it`s easy to make a mistake. The rally route changes all the time with some fast and some slow sections. What is surprising at the start is the loss of power due to the high altitudes.”

What do you think of the rally route? Do you like the stages?
“The rally route is demanding and most of the competitive kilometres are covered during the first two legs. Generally, I like the Mexican tests… In fact I like all the World`s stages (laugh) but liking them is one thing and performing the best way possible in them is another… To be a bit more serious, Mexico rally is a fantastic event.”

You did pretty well in Monte Carlo and Sweden, two very specific events. Coming back to gravel, which are your ambitions?
“It`s true that I scored eight valuable ‘Manufacturers` points for the team on the first two rounds. After Marcus and Seb`, I scored the biggest number of points. Some of our rivals lacked luck but also I think we did well by making no mistake. My ambitions? Mainly have fun! It`s essential if you want to reach the finish and bring back lot of points for the team. I`m happy. I`m 26 years old and I drive in the best team with two World Champions as team-mates. I feel privileged and can`t ask for more.”
