Mexico : SS 5 - 28.87 kmAt 28.87 km, the Guanajuato stage is the second longest of the race and the highest altitude point of the rally. For the second time today the drivers competed in this challenging timed event.
Sebastien Loeb is the first to beat Petter Solberg since the start of the rally, the World Champion setting the pace in SS5. The Frenchman finished with an advantage of nearly nine seconds (8”9) over Mikko Hirvonen, still second at the wheel of his Focus.
Petter Solberg had to settle for third position, the Subaru driver losing only eight tenths of a second over Hirvonen.
Dani Sordo achieved his best result of the race, taking fourth place ahead of Manfred Stohl (fifth) and Matthew Wilson (sixth).
Chris Atkinson went off the road after hitting a rock around 6 km from the start of the stage. Fortunately, the crew is uninjured but the duo will not be able to finish Leg 1.
Henning Solberg lost more than three minutes in this timed event, the Norwegian having to stop to change a wheel on his 307. Henning is presently eighth in the race standings, 42”6 behind seventh place holder Gareth MacHale.
