Tour de Corse : OMV World Rally Team - Finish
Xavier Pons has done it. Due to an excellent seventh overall place at the Rallye de France – Tour de Corse, the 25-year-old Spaniard gathered two WRC points – his first for the OMV World Rally Team.
Thanks to the brilliantly prepared Citroen Xsara WRC, by Kronos Racing, the OMV driver had no problems keeping up with the best during the four special stages of the last day. Pons and Co-driver Carlos del Barrio have their focus now set on the Rallye de Catalunya-Costa Daurada in one week. For the Spaniard wants to gather points at his home rally, as well.

Perfect rally
Xavier Pons encountered no problems during the Rallye de Franc – Tour de Corse, except for a spin on the first special stage on day one. The Spaniard of the OMV World Rally Team felt at home on the Corsican tarmac right from the beginning and got faster by the kilometre.

Pons was rewarded for his perfect performance by two WRC points for 7th overall place – his first for the OMV World Rally Team. The Spaniard particularly showed his forte at the last special stage on Sunday. He was less than 16 seconds behind the lead on the 31 km long special stage in the Citroen Xsara WRC, perfectly tuned by Kronos Racing – that means only about half a second per kilometre. Pons: “This was the perfect rally to me. Most importantly, I realised that I can keep up with the best, even when times got faster and faster towards the end. And the car ran smoothly, as well. I wished each rally were like that.”

Best private team
The OMV World Rally Team had reason to rejoice, as well. After Monte Carlo, New Zealand, Cyprus, Argentina, Germany and Wales they finished as best private team already for the seventh time this season. A position they plan to keep at the last two rallies still outstanding.

Next on the agenda is the Rallye de Catalunya-Costa Daurada in Spain. A rally that Xavier Pons is really looking forward to. “Of course, I want to confirm the result of Corsica at my home rally. And chances are very good, since this event will also take place on tarmac. I can hardly wait to start there,” the OMV driver explains.
