Catalunya : OMV World Rally TeamXavier Pons (Citroen Xsara WRC) is still in the form of the Corsica Rally. The 25-year-old Spaniard is giving a fabulous performance at his home rally, the Movistar Rally RACC Catalunya.
The OMV World Rally Team lies in ninth place after day one – only missing 23 seconds on sixth place. But first things first and therefore the focus is on eighth place in the moment. And there is definitely no lack of confidence after the first day.
Sensational special stage times
One shouldn`t underestimate Xavier Pons, especially on tarmac. Following a fifth best time on SS 2 and a third best time on SS 3 only World Champion Sebastien Loeb was able to beat the Spaniard on the last special stage of the day. “I`m extremely happy. There is obviously more pressure at a home rally since lots of fans come to watch you. And when you drive this good it`s a dream come true. It was nearly 100 percent perfect today,“ explains the OMV driver.
Ready for rain
In the early afternoon the Kronos Racing Team had not been sure whether the risk one took in the choice of tyres would pay off – but it did, in the end. The OMV World Rally team had gained more on SS 3 than they had lost on SS 4. Pons: “I`ve felt surprisingly at home in the rain. If it should be wet on Saturday I`m sure I`ll be able to compete with the best then, as well. I have a lot of self-confidence, right now.“
